What is Magnetic Particle Testing (MPT)?
Magnetic particle testing is a non-destructive testing (NDT) method used to detect surface and near-surface cracks in ferromagnetic materials (such as steel). The aim is to reveal defects that are invisible to the naked eye.
How is it done? (Briefly)
Magnetization
The part to be tested is magnetized with an electric current or a magnet.
Magnetic particle application
Iron powder or liquid magnetic particles are applied to the part.
Defect detection
The magnetic field is disrupted in the cracked area.
Particles accumulate in this area, and the defect becomes visible.
Evaluation
The resulting traces are evaluated.
The part is demagnetized after the test.
Where is it used?
Weld seams
Shafts, gears, spindles
Pressure vessels and steel structures
Advantages
Fast and reliable
Detects subsurface cracks
Does not damage the material
Who should do it?
Certified NDT personnel
