What is Ultrasonic Testing (UT)?
Ultrasonic testing is a safe and non-contact testing method used to detect invisible internal defects (cracks, voids, delamination, etc.) in materials or structures. The aim is to check the safety and durability of the material.
How is it done? (Briefly)
Preparation
The surface to be tested is cleaned.
Ultrasonic wave transmission is usually provided with gel or water.
Equipment Use
The ultrasound probe is placed in contact with the surface.
High-frequency sound waves are sent to the material.
Signal Analysis
Refraction or reflection occurs as the wave passes through the material.
The obtained signals are analyzed on the screen.
Defects, thickness, or structural changes are determined.
Advantages
Does not damage the material (NDT – nondestructive test)
Detects subsurface defects
Applicable to different materials such as metal, plastic, and composite.
Who should perform it?
An authorized and certified ultrasonic testing specialist.
