What is Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement?
Ultrasonic thickness measurement is a method used to measure the thickness of materials such as pipes, tanks, and sheets from one side without damaging the material. The aim is to detect corrosion, wear, and thinning.
How is it done? (Briefly)
Surface preparation
The surface to be measured is cleaned
Gel (couplant) is applied for the transmission of the ultrasonic wave
Measurement
The ultrasonic probe is brought into contact with the surface
The sound wave passes through the material and reflects off the back surface
Result acquisition
The device calculates the thickness according to the round-trip time
The value is displayed in mm on the screen
Where is it used?
Pipelines
Pressure vessels
Tanks and steel structures
Advantages
Non-destructive testing (NDT)
Fast and safe
Measurements can be made on painted surfaces
Who should do it?
Authorized and trained NDT personnel
