What is Periodic Inspection of a Fire Detection and Alarm System?

Periodic inspection of a fire detection system:

* Inspection of the components of the fire alarm system (detectors, sirens, flashers, buttons, control panel, etc.),

* In accordance with relevant standards (e.g., TS EN 54, TS CEN/TS 54-14),

* At specific intervals (monthly, quarterly, annually, etc.),

* By authorized persons or institutions.

These inspections are carried out to document that the system is working without malfunctions and effectively, and to ensure that any deficiencies are rectified.

How is a Periodic Inspection Performed?

The inspection generally includes the following steps:

1. Visual Inspection

* Are the detectors, sirens, and buttons dusty? Is there any physical damage?

* Are the detectors obstructed (by furniture, shelves, decorations, etc.)?

* Are signs and warning boards present and visible?

2. Tests and Functional Checks

• At least one detector from each zone is tested with a testing device (using smoke or heat simulation).

• Button functionality is checked.

• Siren and flashing lights are tested (visually and audibly).

• It is verified that warnings are received correctly from the system control panel.

• The activation of batteries is checked by simulating a power outage.

3. System Backups and Power Supply Check

• Battery voltage and status are measured.

• If a UPS system is present, its functionality is tested.

• System software updates (if any) are checked.

4. Recording and Reporting

• The checks performed are recorded.

• Any malfunctions or deficiencies are reported.

• Necessary maintenance or replacement recommendations are provided.

• The report is signed and delivered to the relevant personnel.

How Often Should This Be Done?

According to Article 2.3 of Annex III of the Work Equipment Regulation, inspection must be carried out at least once a year by authorized engineers or technicians.

Legal Basis and Standards

· Regulation on Fire Protection of Buildings (Turkey)

· TS EN 54 Series (European standard for fire alarm systems)

· TS CEN/TS 54-14 (Rules for the design, installation, commissioning, use and maintenance of fire detection systems)

Who Should Perform It?

It must be performed by authorized Electrical Engineers, Electrical and Electronics Engineers / Electrical Technicians with Ekipnet "K" number, as determined by an equipment inspection organization.
